Meet Lisa Stevens!

You might have seen her before, usually in Studio 3 or upstairs in Studio 2 with the little ones. She’s been a regular substitute teacher for us, FUNdamentals, Ballet, Yoga, and Stretch. Since August she’s been teaching Ballet III.

Lisa brings over 25 years of experience in teaching classical ballet to youth, pre-professionals and adults.  She has been trained as a ballet instructor under Maria Vegh, and also by Ruth Petrinovic in her Seminars for Teachers in Classical Ballet.
She began her professional training with San Francisco Ballet under the direction of Lew and Harold Christensen.
Lisa has performed with San Francisco Ballet, California Imperial Ballet and
Boca Ballet Theatre.
Lisa’s ballet roles have included performing in La Bayadere, Swan Lake, Les Sylphides, Romeo & Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Coppelia and The Nutcracker.

TENDU TALK with Brooke Byrne;

white putty figure in pink tutu

When I was two and a half, my mother took me to see the New York City Ballet. I don’t know what the production was, probably The Nutcracker, but I do remember saying to my mother “I want to wear that.” She interpreted my statement as “I want to do that.”

She was half right.

The local Ballet school wouldn’t take children under age 3, so I had to wait a few months before I got my chance to join. The owner was a marketing genius, requiring the “littles” to wear a uniform to class that consisted of a pink tutu dress with blue velvet ribbon edging the tutu and a fancy lace-up bodice. I had that tutu until I was 12 and could only get one thigh in it. But I remember watching the big girls and thinking, “someday, I will wear a black leotard and practice my splits, too.”

And I did.

Dance was the one constant I had through moves to 3 additional states before the age of 10. I was too shy to make friends easily at my academic schools, but it didn’t matter because I had my classmates in Ballet, and we weren’t supposed to talk to each other anyway. I wasn’t “shy” in dance class, I was “focused”. Going to Ballet performances meant that I had an excuse to stay in my room and read up on the Ballet stories first. When my father installed a barre in front of the mirrored closet door, all hope was lost that little Brookie would willingly emerge from her room for anything but Ballet class.

A love of Ballet expanded to other forms of dance; Jazz, Tap, Modern, Folk, ethnic styles. Each one requiring more investigation into its background, history, culture and geography. Learning about dance led to majoring in dance, led to performing dance internationally which led to teaching dance and later to directing a dance company, and I finally ended up creating a business so I can share the same magic of dance that I received so many years ago. I’ve had a lifetime informed by dance, all because of one chance performance I saw as a toddler.

And I did get to wear some fabulous costumes over the years. Pink tutus included. I am indeed thankful.

Dear parents,

For dancers to learn safely and effectively, the teacher must see the line of their body and extra material can be dangerous if a limb becomes tangled or an eye gets whipped by loose hair.
We have a dress code for each dance style so your dancer can be safe while learning dance.
Please click on the following link to access the dress code on our website.

Our website also has all the answers you might need to questions such as closure dates and tuition costs!

In house COVID-19 practices;

In addition to our regular practice of disinfecting common areas in our studio to maintain good health and well-being in general, GDC will be following these (and more) guidelines for staff, clients and visitors to our school when we reopen.

  • Class schedule has changed to allow for less community contact by spacing the lessons further apart
  • Studios will be wiped down and disinfected in between classes
  • Dancer drop off/pick up only will be allowed; parents, siblings, visitors will not be able to wait in the lobby
  • If your dancer is feeling at all unwell, have them stay at home.
  • If you have traveled or had prolonged contact with someone who has traveled to an affected area, please wait at least 14+ days before coming to Geary Dance Center.
  • We will be following industry specific health and safety guidelines which are stricter than those found in retail and other business sectors.

We look forward to continuing to foster a safe, healthy and supportive community for all of our students, families and staff.

At Geary Dance Center,
We are committed to bringing the freedom and joy of dance to everyone.
We support racial and social justice and understand that all lives matter
when black lives matter.
We stand united against anti-Asian and Pacific Islander hate crimes.
 Bullying, verbal attacks and physical assaults are not tolerated at GDC.
