Caring For Costumes!

A reminder that hair and makeup should be done BEFORE putting on costumes. DO NOT eat or drink anything other than water while in costume.

TUTUS: Ballet tutus can be washed by swishing in Woolite and cold water in the bathtub. Hang to dry, DO NOT PUT IN THE DRYER! Tutus are a delicate plastic mesh and will tear in the washing machine and melt in the dryer.

FRINGE: Costumes with fringe are also delicate and will tangle in the washing machine. It’s best to also swish fringed costumes in Woolite in the bathtub and hang to dry.

SEQUINS: sequins can snag other items causing Laundry Distress Syndrome. You can put sequined costumes in a laundry bag in the washer and hang to dry, but we recommend using the Woolite in the tub method.

GLITTER: Also known as Satan’s dandruff. Definitely use the Woolite in the tub method unless you want glitter on all your clothes for the rest of your life.

PRO TIP: put a mix of 50% water and 50% vodka in a spray bottle and spritz on parts of costumes that become a bit stinky between rehearsals!

Don’t want your costumes after performance? There’s always Halloween, siblings, cousins or consider giving another child the excitement of having a costume by donating to a family homeless or emergency shelter like Hamilton House or Goodwill. Or consider donating it back to Geary Dance Center for the annual Halloween costume sale. All proceeds benefit our scholarship program.
