CLASSICAL BALLET BUN
Click here for a Houston Ballet Youtube tutorial on making a perfect bun with 3 different hair textures.
Placement is at the crown of the head (where the whorl is). If the bun can support a book on top of the head it’s in the right place.
If your dancer has short hair, make 2 little ponytails in back and next to each other and pin together, add hairnet, pin some more. It will be a low bun, but the dancer’s neck and face will be exposed.
Please do not use “bun donuts” or crocheted hairnets in various colors. Most Ballet dancers will have a hair accessory for their costume and that should be the only ornamentation in the hair.
Items needed to make a bun:
1) water spray bottle
2) bristle brush (not the ones with the balls on the ends)
3) ponytail holder
3) ponytail holder
4) a whole package of pins to make sure you have enough.
5) mesh hairnet in color close to hair color
6) gel and hairspray

PRO TIP: dirty hair holds a bun better!
HIGH PONYTAIL
If your dancer is required to have a high ponytail, follow the same instructions as the bun video and then stop after the ponytail is complete.
Items needed to make a high ponytail:
1) water spray bottle
2) bristle brush (not the ones with the balls on the ends)
3) ponytail holder
3) ponytail holder
4) gel and hairspray
5) pin bangs and stray hairs in X pattern together for extra hold

If your dancer is required to have a high ponytail, make sure that all stray hairs are pinned and sprayed.
PRO TIP: criss cross bobby pins to really hold those wisps!
LOW PONYTAIL
Items needed to make a low ponytail:
1) water spray bottle
2) bristle brush (not the ones with the balls on the ends)
3) ponytail holder
3) ponytail holder
4) gel and hairspray

If your dancer is required to have a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, make sure that all stray hairs are pinned and sprayed.
PRO TIP: make sure you have a tight ponytail or use 2 ponytail holders so low ponys dont slip out!
