Geary Dance Theater: Dance Teams and Performance Groups

Geary Dance Center’s Dance Teams and Performance Groups were created for those dancers who are ready for the next level in in their dance training and committed to increasing their performance experience. Dance Teams will compete in local and Northern CA dance competitions in Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop and/or Funk and the Performance Group will perform for community events and social service organizations.

Junior Dance Team: ages 9-12, must remain currently enrolled in the academic year in at least 1 class of level I of higher. Must commit to practice sessions in both semesters and at least 2 competitions in the Spring Semester.

Teen Dance Team: ages 13-18, must remain currently enrolled in the academic year in at least one class of level I or higher in Jazz, Contemporary or Hip Hop or Level II or higher in Ballet or Tap. Must commit to practice sessions in both semesters and at least 2 competitions in the Spring Semester.

Senior Dance Team: ages 13-18 must remain currently enrolled in the academic year in at least one classes of level II or above in Jazz, Comteporary or Hip Hop or level III or higher in Ballet or Tap, placement by audition or invitation only. Must commit to 2 practice sessions in both semesters and at least 2 competitions in the Spring Semester.

Solos and Duets: For dancers with at least one year of prior dance competition experience. Solos must conform to competition requirements regarding length and GDC requirements regarding skill level and family friendly age-appropriate content, costume and music. Dancers must be on a GDC team and enrolled in GDC classes. Practice and registration fees are separate from the group team fees. Solos and duets can be in any genre the dance competitions accept and are not limited to a max number of competitions.

Requirements:
Enrollment in semester classes is mandatory to remain on a team. Attending practice is mandatory to remain on a team.  Dance Team participants must be prepared for a higher degree of committment than recreational classes. Team members have limits on absences and must put the team first before individual desires. Dance Teams require a higher level of commitment and team members must budget their time and make the team a priority in their schedule. Team members must demonstrate leadership skills of kindness, generosity and respect for themselves, each other, GDC staff and faculty and competitors. Participation on the teams is an academic year commitment. The Fall Semester is focused on learning choreography, the Spring Semester is when the competitions occur. Teams also perform the group dances in the recital. Competing with a solo or duet is optional and has additional costs. GDC Team members must not compete with another dance studio while on the GDC team.

Team Fees: $25/class per session (number of weeks in the session determined each semester)
Practice fees will be bundled with any additional costs that can include competition registration fees, photo/video fees, costume and makeup fees, team uniform and choreography fee. Choreography for solos, duets and trios will be taught separately from group pieces in scheduled private lessons. Competing in Solos and duets are not required to participate on the team. Participation in the group choreography is required to be on the team.

Fees for Team Jacket, hair & makeup needs, shoes and foundation garments are not included in the package.

Dance Team members are automatically enrolled in the Geary Dance Theater Performance Group at no extra charge.

GEARY DANCE THEATER PERFORMANCE GROUP
Created for those dancers who want to proceed to the next level in their dance training but can’t commit to the training and time requirements of the competition team. Performance Group is a great idea if the student wants to be on the team eventually. This group will perform for schools, neighborhood associations and social service organizations, minimum of one outside performance and recital each year. Spring Semester commitment only. Practices coincide with the Team practices on Saturdays.

Performance Group Practice Fees: $25/class per session (number of weeks in the session determined each semester)
Additional costs will include T-shirt, costume and makeup fees and any entrance or participation fees required by the venue.

INDEPENDENT COMPETITORS
If you are a dancer who competes independently and find the need for a dance studio to sponsor you, Geary Dance Center is happy to act as an umbrella organization. We charge a $25 admin fee for the registration process and a $25 fee per registration per competition for a minimum charge of $50 per competition. If you want or need a GDC representative to assist at the competition, we charge $25/hour for the period from call time to end of awards ceremony. We do not offer driving service or child care before, during, or after the competition.
